A hernia occurs when tissue — usually part of the intestine — pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. Hernias are common, affecting millions of people. Many hernias cause only mild discomfort and can be monitored. But some hernias can become life threatening emergencies.

Warning Signs of a Dangerous Hernia — Go to Emergency Immediately:

Never Ignore a Hernia: Hernias do not heal on their own. They only grow larger over time. The safest approach is to have your hernia evaluated by a specialist and repaired before it becomes an emergency.

  • Hernia becomes suddenly larger and very painful

  • You cannot push the hernia back in (it was reducible before, now it isn't)

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Fever

  • Redness or skin discoloration over the hernia

  • No bowel movement and no passage of gas

These symptoms suggest strangulation — the blood supply to the herniated tissue has been cut off. This is a surgical emergency.
